Aim and Background: This research was conducted with the aim of evaluating the relationship between social support and mindfulness with post-traumatic growth with the mediation of self-compassion in adolescents with cancer.
Materials and Method: The population of this study consisted of all adolescents diagnosed with cancer who were hospitalized in public hospitals in Tehran in 2024. From this population, 141 patients were selected using a convenience sampling method. The participants completed the following instruments: the Phillips Social Support Questionnaire, the Greco and Baer Mindfulness Questionnaire, the Tedeschi and Calhoun Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, and the Neff Self-Compassion Scale. Data were analyzed using path analysis with SPSS-24 and AMOS-24 software.
The proposed model was confirmed after conducting the path analysis. The path coefficients indicated that the direct effects of mindfulness, social support, and self-compassion on posttraumatic growth were statistically significant. In addition, the direct effects of mindfulness and social support on self-compassion were also significant. Furthermore, the results of the bootstrap analysis demonstrated that mindfulness indirectly enhanced posttraumatic growth through the mediating role of self-compassion. In other words, mindfulness facilitated the process of growth following trauma by fostering self-compassion. Similarly, social support was indirectly related to posttraumatic growth through its positive impact on self-compassion. Receiving social support, therefore, can strengthen self-compassion and provide the foundation for psychological growth after trauma.
Findings: Finally, the results of this study indicate that the mediating role of self-compassion with post-traumatic growth in the relationship between social support and mindfulness is significant.
Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that strengthening social support and teaching mindfulness and self-compassion can have an effective role in the post-traumatic growth of adolescents with cancer.
