Aim and Background: The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation interventions and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on memory and executive function in women with breast cancer
Methods and Materials: This was an experimental study with a multi-group pre-test-post-test design with follow-up. The statistical population of this study consisted of 60 women with breast cancer in Urmia province in 1403, who were selected through purposive sampling and divided into four groups of 15 people. The first experimental group underwent cognitive rehabilitation intervention (CRT; 12 sessions of 45 minutes based on the manual of Solberg and Matir, 2001), the second experimental group underwent mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT; 8 sessions of 20 to 45 minutes based on the manual of Segal et al., 2002), and the third experimental group underwent a combined intervention of CRT and MBCT, while the control group remained on the waiting list. Interventions were held in the form of weekly group sessions, and post-tests and quarterly follow-ups were conducted to assess the effects. The instruments used included the N-Back test (working memory measurement) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST; executive function measurement).
Findings: The findings showed that the CRT intervention significantly improved memory and executive function (P<0.01), and the MBCT intervention also significantly improved all variables. A significant difference was observed between the effectiveness of CRT and MBCT in improving memory and executive function (P<0.01), and CRT was more effective than MBCT in all variables (P<0.05).
Conclusions: These findings indicate that the simultaneous use of cognitive rehabilitation and mindfulness can be an effective strategy for improving cognitive functions in female patients with breast cancer.
