Aim and Background: Growing evidence supports non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents, but little attention has been paid to the role of psychological etiology and its mediating factors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between experiential avoidance and interpersonal emotion regulation with non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents with the mediating role of self-punishment.
Methods and Materials: The design of this research was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population of the research included first and second grade high school students, both male and female, in Isfahan in the academic year 1403-1404. 444 people were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling and responded to the Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire (Games et al.), Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Hoffman et al.), Self-punishment Questionnaire (Wells et al.), and Self-injurious Behaviors and Functions Questionnaire (Klonsky and Glenn). For data analysis, at the descriptive level, central tendency and dispersion indices (mean and standard deviation) were used to present the status of the research variables. At the inferential level, tests to examine assumptions (Kolmogorov-Smirnov and absence of multiple collinearity), Pearson correlation coefficient, and structural equations were used. It should be noted that all statistical analyses were performed using two statistical software SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 26.
Findings: The research findings showed that the model related to the relationship between experiential avoidance and interpersonal emotion regulation with non-suicidal self-harm behaviors in adolescents has a good fit, considering the mediating role of self-punishment.
Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate the mediating role of self-punishment in the relationship between experiential avoidance and interpersonal emotion regulation with non-suicidal self-injury. Therefore, it seems necessary and important for therapists and school counselors to consider the role of these variables when working with adolescent students, especially in treatment and counseling centers
