Aim and Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders, often associated with impulsivity and impaired future-oriented thinking. This study aimed to examine the role of impulsivity and family functioning in predicting future thinking among children with ADHD.
Methods and Materials: This was a descriptive-correlational study. The statistical population included all male students aged 10 to 12 years with ADHD symptoms in selected schools in Tehran during the 2023–2024 academic year. A total of 150 students were initially screened using the Conners Parent Rating Scale, and 100 met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using the Conners Parent Questionnaire, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (1995), the McMaster Family Assessment Device (1950), and the Future Thinking Questionnaire (2020). Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression via SPSS version 27.
Findings: The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between family functioning and future thinking (p < 0.01), and a significant negative correlation between impulsivity and future thinking (p < 0.01).
Conclusions: Impulsivity and family functioning are key predictors of future-oriented thinking in children with ADHD. Therapeutic and educational interventions aimed at reducing impulsivity and enhancing family functioning can help improve future thinking and overall adaptive functioning in these children.
