Aim and Background: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can negatively affect the mental health of affected women. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effectiveness of schema therapy and rational-emotional therapy on the severity of emotional instability symptoms and marital problems in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Methods and Materials: The research method was an experimental design with a pretest-posttest design and a one-month follow-up with the control group. The statistical population of the study included all women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder who referred to a gynecologist in Isfahan in the first half of 1403. A total of 45 people were selected using the available sampling method and randomly assigned to three groups of 15 people (schema therapy, rational-emotional therapy, and control). The research tools included emotional instability questionnaires (Kessler et al., 2003), marital problems (Strauss, 1979). The first experimental group received schema therapy during 10 90-minute sessions, the second experimental group received rational-emotive therapy during 10 90-minute sessions, and the control group was placed on a waiting list. All three groups were evaluated in three stages: pretest, posttest, and follow-up using research tools. The data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test. Statistical calculations were performed using SPSS_V26 statistical software.
Findings: The results of the Bonferroni post hoc test showed that both schema therapy and rational-emotional therapy had a significant effect on the severity of emotional instability (p<0.05), marital problems (p<0.05) of women with premenstrual dysphoric symptoms, and the stability of these effects was maintained over time, and in the follow-up phase, its effectiveness became significant (p<0.05). Schema therapy was more effective than rational-emotional therapy on the severity of emotional instability (p<0.05) and marital problems (p<0.05).
Conclusions: According to the findings of the study, schema therapy and rational-emotional therapy are among the effective treatments for improving the severity of emotional instability and are recommended.
