Aim and Background: Experiencing weight stigma is one of the major social consequences of overweight and obesity, negatively impacting individuals' quality of life. The use of accurate tools to assess this experience is essential in therapeutic interventions and clinical research. The present study aimed to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Stigmatizing Situations Inventory–Brief (SSI-B) among an Iranian sample of overweight and obese individuals.
Methods and Materials: This descriptive-validation study was conducted on 370 individuals with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25, selected through convenience sampling. Participants completed the SSI-B scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using the maximum likelihood method was performed to assess the factor structure. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, composite reliability, McDonald’s omega, and convergent validity with BMI were evaluated. Additionally, multi-group CFA was used to assess measurement invariance across gender. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 24.
Findings: The one-factor structure of the SSI-B showed good model fit (CFI = 0.96, RMSEA = 0.06, χ²/df = 2.49). Factor loadings ranged from 0.34 to 0.77. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.81, composite reliability 0.85, and McDonald’s omega 0.84. Test-retest reliability was 0.93. Convergent validity was confirmed through a significant correlation with BMI (r = 0.46). Multi-group CFA indicated measurement invariance across gender (ΔCFI < 0.01).
Conclusions: The Persian version of the SSI-B is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing experienced weight stigma among overweight and obese individuals, and can be effectively used in screening, psychosocial interventions, and related research.
