Aim and Background: This study examined how cognitive flexibility predicts the quality of interpersonal relationships in university students with symptoms of depression, focusing on the mediating role of a solution-building mindset during this critical developmental stage.
Methods and Materials: This correlational study utilized a path analysis approach. The statistical population consisted of students at the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili during the 2024-2025 academic year. A two-stage sampling method (multi-stage cluster and purposive sampling) was employed, and 128 students (85 females and 43 males) with scores of 21 to 27 on the depression subscale of the DASS-21 questionnaire and confirmed severe depressive symptoms through interviews were selected. Data were collected using the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), the Solution-Building Inventory (SBI), and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Pearson correlation analysis and path analysis were conducted using SPSS 27 and AMOS 24 to analyze the collected data.
Findings: The results indicated a good fit between the structural model and the observed data. A significant direct relationship was found between cognitive flexibility and the quality of interpersonal relationships (p = 0.001). Furthermore, the indirect relationship between cognitive flexibility and the quality of interpersonal relationships, mediated by a Solution-building mindset, was also statistically significant (p = 0.001).
Conclusions: The findings of this study demonstrate that the quality of interpersonal relationships can be predicted by cognitive flexibility, with a Solution-building mindset acting as a significant mediator in this relationship. Consequently, interventions aimed at enhancing cognitive flexibility and fostering a Solution-building mindset among students experiencing depressive symptoms may contribute to the improvement of their interpersonal relationships.
