Aim and Background Accurate assessment of emotional competence in children under 6 years of age is of great importance; therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Children's Emotional Competence Questionnaire, Parent Form by Bartrolli et al. (2021).
Methods and Materials: The present study method was a quantitative and descriptive correlational study. The statistical population of this study consisted of children aged 3 to 6 years in Yazd, of whom 330 were selected as the research sample using the convenience sampling method and completed the emotional competence questionnaires by Bartrolli et al. (2021) and the emotional intelligence questionnaire by Kazemi et al. (2022). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the construct validity, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used for convergent validity, and Cronbach's alpha was used to assess reliability with SPSS and AMOS software.
Findings: The results of the study showed that the three components of emotional awareness, emotional regulation, and emotional well-being had significant factor loadings, and the model fit indices were also at an acceptable level, which confirms the construct validity of the questionnaire. On the other hand, a positive and significant correlation was observed between emotional competence and its components with the emotional intelligence variable, indicating the convergent validity of this questionnaire. Also, the Cronbach's alpha of the emotional competence variable was obtained to be 0.945, which indicates the desirable reliability of the questionnaire.
Conclusions: In general, the results of the study indicate that this questionnaire has very desirable validity and reliability in Iranian society; therefore, researchers and specialists can use this questionnaire to carry out clinical and research measures.
