Aim and Background: Psychological distress is one of the significant mental health challenges in older adults. Given the increasing importance of addressing the psychological needs of this group, identifying factors that influence psychological distress is essential. In this context, the present study aims to provide a conceptual model to explain psychological distress in older adults based on adverse childhood experiences, with the mediating role of cognitive flexibility and emotional intelligence.
Methods and Materials: The present study was a descriptive correlational research. The statistical population included elderly individuals in Tehran city, with 322 participants selected through a non-random convenience sampling method during September and October 2023. Participants completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire by Felitti et al. (1998), the Cognitive Flexibility Scale by Dennis and Vanderwal (2010), the Emotional Intelligence Scale by Bradberry and Graves (2004), and the Psychological Distress Scale by Lovibond and Lovibond (1979). The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with SPSS version 25 and Amos version 26.
Findings: The findings of the study indicate that adverse childhood experiences, in addition to directly predicting psychological distress in older adults, also predict levels of psychological distress indirectly through the mediating variables of cognitive flexibility and emotional intelligence. The proposed conceptual model was supported (p<0.05).
Conclusions: It can be concluded that, in designing educational and therapeutic interventions to improve the quality of mental health and psychological well-being in older adults, greater attention should be given to the role of cognitive flexibility and emotional intelligence in moderating the adverse outcomes of adverse childhood experiences
